Collection: Wings & Wind
The imagery was inspired by many trips to the beach and seeing the birds fly around. I always leave feeding the birds for the end of a beach visit because they make the air so busy and chaotic that I don't want to hang around under them. I do want to see them do their thing up close for a few moments though. Flapping and hovering to defy gravity.
I hope viewers feel both that sense of busyness and calm when looking at these paintings. It works, because you don't want a painting so calm that it's boring or so busy that you want to avert your eyes for a rest. These paintings strike the balance that I aim for with life.
A challenge of these pieces has been adding more and more layers and staying detached from items underneath. A few times I thought I had a really wonderful bird, and maybe I spared it and let future layers work around it, but other times I let the precious things get covered up. All of the layers add so much so to me it is worth it to have many beautiful parts layered together, it's ok that you can't necessarily see each bird directly. The top layers are improved by the under layers.
