This one borrows its title from a Jack Handey Deep Thought on old-school SNL: “We like to praise birds for flying. But how much of it is actually flying, and how much of it is just sort of coasting from the previous flap?” My college roommate—now one of my collectors—had that quote on our wall for at least a year. It still makes me laugh and gets at the paradox of effort and ease, of doing the work and then riding the momentum.
A flock of neon orange birds takes off in the upper right corner—but one has drifted from the group. Can you spot it? I liked the idea of letting that color wander. The orange paper actually comes from the wristbands I received after a temperature checks a work during the early return-to-the office after the stay-at-home COVID days—a strange little relic of that time.
This piece has the warmest orange set off against blue. This piece doesn't have a lot of purple, but does have just enough built into the underlayers to add depth.
