Piera was Mona Lisa the woman's 2nd born and a daughter. Sadly she didn't live long. Mona Lisa had her next child within the same year of losing Piera. Mona Lisa gazes out from the peony shrubs in this one.
This painting is part of a series that is a rebellious take on the iconic Mona Lisa. This the one that most references a mustache like Dali had and Marcel Duchamp’s drawing of a mustache and beard on a reproduction of the Mona Lisa, known as L.H.O.O.Q.
Soft pinks, corals, magenta and more yellow-y greens grow up from the bottom with wonderful upward energy.
The flowers don’t decorate Mona Lisa—they challenge her, surround her, maybe even protect her. It’s a collision of classical calm and painterly chaos.
